Plant Propagation

Tomato Prop

I know this is pretty much well known in the gardening community… but I never knew how easily tomatos root in water. This is one week after I accidentally broke a stem off my garden tomato plant. Also means you can prop many plants from a single tomato plant. Never stop discovering new things.

Nice! I was thinking about trying this later in the season.

    What I don’t understand:
If you take a cutting and it roots, is the plant still x years old? Or does it’s age somehow restart?

For example, tomatoes only live 2-3 years max and their first year is the productive one, but could you theoretically keep rooting stems and keep that tomato alive forever? I mean… it must be the case to some extent because that’s how fruit tree varieties exist, except with grafts…?
