Planning on wrapping my pergola in English Ivy

Hey everyone, I’m starting on what I hope will be a fun project. I’m planning on training some English ivy to start going up one of the corners of my pergola. I went and bought a bunch and am keeping it in a pot for now. I’m scared sh*tless of planting it in my mulch bed out of fear that it will overpower everything, including schip laurels and Japanese maple trees and the like, that are nearby. My idea is that keeping it in a pot will make it easy for me to control it and also abort should things go south. I realize that a drawback with this is that i will need to manually water it as opposed to relying on my sprinkler system, which I will do. Does anyone think this would work out ok? I’ve become obsessed with climbing plants as of late and really wanna get this going. Just hoping for some assurance really. I plan to use a natural rope around the pedestal to guide the ivy up in kind of a spiral pattern. Thanks kindly in advance!

If you are content with the English ivy getting everywhere – throughout all of your beds, on your house, fences, knock yourself out. Just know you’re going to need to stay on top of it frequently to keep it under control. In perpetuity.

It’s everywhere here and a constant battle cutting, spraying, and pulling to keep it at bay. A complete nuisance weed.

I wouldn’t wish English Ivy on my worst enemy. I’d pick a native vine. It’s so much work it gets everywhere.
