[Music] hi everyone welcome to today’s video I’m Lisa with down toe gardening and design and today’s video is kind of a two for one because we’re doing a follow-up video to our planting up a seasonal window box using Evergreens so we’re going to transform this spring window box into a summer window box today but the other uh bonus of the video is that I’m going to show you how to use one hanger to put in your box so using a hang hanging plant can really take the guesswork out of things um because it’s already a beautiful mix of flowers so we’re going to talk a little bit about what’s in this hanger um so you don’t have to buy your flowers separately and try to mix and match and come up with some color and texture because you can find a lot of beautiful hanging plants out there with a mix of beautiful summer annuals and also it saves on the budget a little bit because I’m just going to use this one hanger to dress this up so first and foremost the window box that we planted this spring um what was fun and different about it for us is that we Ed some little Evergreens and we promised in that spring video that we were going to post post videos when we switch it out seasonally this year so typically we do four um dress ups of our containers and window boxes a year it’s spring summer fall and winter and we’re using our summer annuals now because our pansies which are cool weather annuals are starting to really Fade Out which is normal because they love the cool weather not so much the heat but these beauties that I have in my hand here they are all summer and warm weather lovers so I do also want to say that the other bonus so many bonuses to using this hanger in this box here but the other added bonus is that we have another one the exact match to this hanger on the other side of the house so Hannah likes to put a uh hanging plant in front of her picture window because that’s where their living room is and they put a Little Hummingbird feeder out and they watch the hummingbirds um from the living room so that’s pretty great so we’re going to give this house some continuity and a little bit of symmetry because we have matching hangers and one of course we’re keeping as a hanger but the other one we’re going to use the same exact mix in this window box here all right so let’s get started Hannah and I were just saying that it’s kind of funny because the pansies actually don’t look that bad but you can see that they do start to get a little bit of leggy legginess to them um but it just shows how great Hannah is attending to her containers and her garden because they they’re still looking pretty great so first thing we’re going to do is we are going to clean this box out and then I’m going to talk about the mix that we have and we’re going to show you how we’re going to work around these Evergreens we may or may not um save some of the little vines in the front I have a couple of other Drapers that I may want to add but I have a feeling that this container is going to be pretty full when we’re done so for tools what we need is the most important one and I’m going to put some uh links up for you in the description in case you’re interested my Hy Hy knife so I love this because essentially it is a Trel it also gives you some measurements here for digging um so you’ll know planting depths but it has this serrated edge here and that’s really going to help me remove um what I’m taking out of the window box and keep my Evergreens is by using this little tool so I have that here and of course I’m going to get my gloves out I have a Tru I have a little bit of allpurpose granule um fertilizer and some compost out of the mix if need be okay so I’m just going to start off by removing the the pansies and I’m going to see what I can just take out by hand first before I start digging cuz we are going to try to be careful to not disturb the roots of the little Evergreens so that’s going to be the trick here so I think for now I am going to take out the Swedish ivy I do want to make sure that I have plenty of room so I’m going to take it out like this and I can either recycle it in this window box or Hannah could use it in another container here okay same with the ivy so I’m going to put these little plants aside cuz I don’t like to put plants in the compost pile unless I really really have to [Music] that one’s not looking as good as the others so I think we may forfeit that one okay so just loose loosening up the soil a little bit we did have some little daffodils in here too so I think we’re going to recycle the bulbs here okay so now we’re going to do is I’m just going to grab another Tru because I want to remove some of this soil and just set it aside to make sure that I have enough room for the roots of the hanging plant because it looks pretty established okay so I remove some soil and I’m just going to set that aside and see if I need it or um if I can recycle it but now I’m going to add some slow release granules so this is going to give our annuals a little bit of a boost um and get them to continuously throw out some flowers here so just going to mix that in the soil a little bit okay now we’re going to tackle our hanging plant so let me show you how we’re going to take it out of the pot and divide it up so I had mentioned that we’re going to talk about the mix that’s in this gorgeous hanger here and so I just want to do that quickly in case you’re interested in the same mix of plants so there’s some geraniums here they do need some Dead Heading but I wanted to keep the flowers on just to show you the color so that’s this here then we have some purple fan flower that’s a nice easy annual we have some hot pink Rina we have some million bells here some little tiny patunas and then we have a little pop of white with this bopa here that’s hiding so that will get nice and drapey so really pretty colorful mix here Hannah and I like to mix up our colors um every year and with the business when we do displays for different clients it’ll be different every year we like to have fun with colors and textures these are all full sun annual uh annuals okay so the first thing you want to do is just take the hanger off so there’s typically just little Clips on here that you’re just sliding off um in a pin you can just go ahead and cut them right off unless you really want to recycle it and then we’re just going to try to ease it out of the pot here nice and established so sometimes they’ll have a tray around the bottom so make sure that you lift that off as well and then this might be the scary part so we’re going to try to cut it up a little bit so really I’m just kind of feeling around to see if I can loosen up the soil and not have to Forfeit any of these pretty plants so this is something that you’ll want to take your time with and just kind of feel around and go slow so ideally I would like to split this into four making a little bit of a mess but messes are my specialty okay there we go so now I have two pieces and depending on the size of your window box you may be able to work with just two pieces okay so this could be a little section um even for the end it’s a little easier to see here now that we’ve got it aart where we can make our Cuts so we’re also working with this a little bit on the dry side and it’s actually helping keeping things together so we’re going to make sure that we give this a really good water once we get this settled okay now the other thing that I’m going to do while I’m over here making a mess is I’m just going to trim off a little bit of the bottom because our window box is not that deep so you can just see here what I’m trimming off okay so I’m going to bring these back over to our window box okay so we’re going to put our first chunk of the hanging plant into the window box and we’re just going to work around our little Evergreens which I’m loving so I’m just going to settle it in there still need to remove a little more soil here so there was only one geranium in the pot and it was a good size one so what I’m just trying to do is kind of work it around the middle Evergreen so it has the appearance um that there’s more than one okay and before we go ahead and fill it and we’re just going to put our other pieces in make sure that we love [Music] it okay so I’m going to just um stand back and have a look look and then I think I’m going to put at least three of the Drapers back in see if I can squeeze them in believe it or not because I love a really full window box so let me just stand back and look so I like the uniformity of the colors and I can see that I have at least one spot on this end for um an ivy so I’m going to give it some balance and then maybe try to add the other healthy Swedish ivy in the mix as [Music] well okay although I would love this in the center I do not want to disturb the Evergreens so I’m going to put it on the side that’s a little thinner okay so now I’m just going to go ahead and fill it all in and then we’re going to give it a good water and um I’m just going to talk about after care and just some final thoughts okay so we’re wrapping it up and what I like to do when I get everything settled is go back through with some new potting soil or if I can my recycled potting soil which is totally fine if you can recycle it it’s great and that’s why I added a little bit of the new fertilizer granules and a little bit of compost just to kind of soup it up a little bit so you want to go around and you want to fill up all of the air pockets so you want to make sure that everything um has plenty of soil so no holes in here or air pockets so we’re just kind of feeling our way around and then um the last thing I want to mention before we get to watering is deadheading now I did mention a little earlier that I did not dead head the geraniums or anything before planting because I wanted to see I wanted you to see all the colors and the blooms but I’m going to refrain from deadheading until things get settled so it definitely needs it but I’m going to give it a few days because it just went through a little bit of transplant shock um just by cutting that plant up and had been in the pot for a little while so I would recommend if you’re doing this at home just to not dead head it right away let it get settled a little bit and then give it plenty of water so we’re coming into summer now the temperatures are going to heat up and it’s going to dry out even quicker and containers do dry out pretty quick this one here is great this window box because it it is self-watering so it does have um a little tray underneath but it still needs to be watered daily so especially when you have plants in a container and they’re in full sun you want to give them a good water daily and that’s it I think it looks pretty great we just used three of our recycled ivys from our spring planting our on hanger with some beautiful summer annuals and we saved our little Evergreens um which was the goal of the video to do this this year so this is a really great little investment and I think they really Pop I love the texture of them but I don’t know if you remember that we did a window box tour and container tour in South Carolina and that’s where I saw a lot of these and got this idea so this is a trend that I really hope sticks around and stay tuned for when we um swi when we swap it up this fall and do our fall window box so thank you again for joining me I love doing these videos for you and if you liked it please go ahead and give it a thumbs up and stay tuned And subscribe to our channel for many more gardening videos [Music]
