Theres some give in the caudex and the leaves are droopy, should i water? Mix is 50% perlite 50% lava rock with some organic soil sprinkled in

These are really easy growers in my experience. I keep mine in about 6-6.5 hours of direct sun outside, with the caudex exposed, and I try to keep the caudex as firm as possible with little to no give. I water roughly once every week and a half (or longer if we get some rain) here in the Midwest US but it’ll be a little different for your climate.

I’m not quite sure if the caudex would prefer to be shaded but mine has never burned and it gets a good amount of shade once its fully leafed out anyway.

I think you could cut the stem back down to reset the plant, because you don’t know how it has been grown by the previous owner, and put them in the location that you want it to remain – it will regrow stem and leaves. I keep mine in 50/50 pumice/soill and only water once the soil is dry, the caudex is kept away from direct light but still get some light mainly for the leaves.
