today I’m transforming a cozy balcony in New Jersey into a vibrant edible Oasis it’s perfect for a couple who loves to cook they can step onto their balcony and snip fresh ingredients for any dish Let’s Get [Music] Growing welcome to Skyhigh Harvest I’m nastasha and I’m on a mission to inspire those with limited space to grow their own fresh nutritious produce right at home so let’s hop on a call with Jed and Lauren to uncover their vision for this green Oasis it’s early September so we only have two months left in the growing season I was thinking that we could do a lot of cool weather crops crops like arugula spinach lettuce stuff like that because they like the cooler temperatures right and whatever does grow we will consume and that’s really what sparked my attention with all of this because I’m sick of having to go buy it when it’s so expensive and it’s you know it’s not the best quality much rather just walk out to my balcony and trim whatever I need that dish you know we’ve got a rail where we can hang some uh some planters off of we have a couple spaces for pots but not a ton of space we have some room we love plants that talk to us if they start to do this a little water then they per right back up yeah pretty easy you know so I am so excited to create an Edible Garden for you where you can just walk out on your balcony trim whatever you need and make something delicious we’re excited too this space B is brimming with potential but since it’s a rental and drilling isn’t an option I’m focusing on a portable and renter friendly design that maximizes space considering the limited ground space for pots I’m liking the railing as a solution to grow more crops while keeping the floor uncluttered lettuce spinach and arugula are cool weather crops so they’ll appreciate the shade from the tree and the cooler temperatures will prevent them from going to seed the sage thyme oregano and mint are perennials and they’ll grow again next year giving Jed and Lauren a head start in the spring so to bring this transformation to life I’ve crafted a detailed plan using the garden Planner tool from garden planner. almanac.com I can’t go into all the ins and outs here Gro created this site one of my favorite YouTube gardeners by the way after carefully considering the space and my design ideas I’ve decided on two tall pots and eight hanging baskets that will fit seamlessly on the balcony ensuring enough room for the plants to thrive and to add warmth and enhance the brick on the back wall I’ve chosen these tall pots in these warm beige tones and I love these hanging baskets with these cocoa liners for their Rich color palette and excellent drainage they also promote soil Iration prevent compaction and improve root health hi how do you want me to get out the real star of the show how you doing no you’re doing great stay there so we made it here to edgew New Jersey oh we made it here to Edgewater New Jersey okay so we made it here to Edgewater New Jersey we just started have living some furniture around everything so let’s get in there and get started on the plants hey it will fit yeah I like it I think it’s cuz like actually how else this with the layout in place it’s time to roll up our sleeves and get our hands in the soil I’m starting with the two tall pots these will be the new home for these tomato transplants known for their extensive root systems to make the most of the space and to intercrop I’m adding oregano and time from my garden which will serve as fantastic ground cover and deter pests the size and depth of these tall pots are just right to accommodate all those roots and create a thriving mini ecosystem and for a quick one minute tutorial on intercropping don’t miss out on this YouTube short so yeah do like we’re going to fill up 2/3 of this [Music] soil these are plants that I grew in my garden and they were neglected a bit I’m trying to put this down as far as possible because wherever you fill the soil to it’s going to make Roots so having it down further it’s going to make this plant stronger I mean it’s just moist you know it’s like look at this this is like black forest cake which is my favorite cake actually it’s great so anytime you have a leaf that’s touching the soil you cut it off that’s a easy way for bugs to climb up just gives them more surface area to climb up just take those bottom leaves [Music] off but the fertilizer is key if you want big plants you need to fertilize this is where I wish YouTube had a smell yeah so you guys can really appreciate how terrible this smells it smells terrible but I can’t stop smelling I know you kind of want to smell it I kind of want to keep smelling it but I also don’t want to smell it at all what is the facial expression for the smell um some plants are going to die at the frost and you have to start over next year and then some plants are going to grow back like but you don’t have to repot the whole thing you don’t have to take out all the soil no you you just start over with a new seed next year oh that’s okay yes this is what’s going to be cool about this space for them is they’re already going to have this set up so come April they can just throw some tomato seeds in here and it’s going to make new Tomatoes now that we have the tomato plants in their pots let’s move on to the so I nearly forgot to create drainage holes at the bottom of these pots it’s essential for every tomato plant to have proper drainage because tomatoes are not fans of wet feet in other words they don’t appreciate their Roots sitting in water as it can lead to fungal infections which we definitely want to avoid do as I say not as I almost didn’t do messy patio is a sign of fruitful things to come that’s right I’m still considering the number and placement of the hanging baskets we’ve got a total of eight to work with but you know I want to strike that perfect balance I don’t want to overwhelm the space but at the same time I’m aiming to make the most of the available soil surface area to maximize this precious balcony real estate in other words I want to grow as many crops as possible and it still look aesthetically pleasing but I finally decided that three should be enough and with intercropping I will be able to fit almost all the crops I had intended I’m only losing two crops that I wanted to plant the arugula and the spinach and it’s fine it’s totally fine hey give this video a thumbs up if you think I made the right choice I absolutely love the depth of these hanging baskets it provides ample square footage for the plant roots to explore and absorb all the nutrients they need whether you’re using pots or really any containers always opt for potting soil as it’s enriched with nutrients our plants need to thrive one of my favorite potting soils Happy Frog is linked in the description below along with all the other supplies for this transformation let’s finish placing these babies in their new home first up a mint transplant from my own garden always keep mint in a pot mint has a tendency to spread aggressively via underground Runners so planting it in the ground can turn your yard into a mint jungle next we have basil specifically Mammoth basil lovely oversized leaves it’s both delicious and Visually appealing alongside it I’m planting two sweet genovesi basil plants that I started from seed they’re still young but Jed and Lauren can start using them right away check out this 2-year-old sage plant that’s been thriving in my garden it looks perfect here and Fs in the space face nicely moving on to some baby lettuce also grown from seed they might be a tad young for transplanting but you know we’ll see how they Faire as a bit of Insurance I’m also planting a few seeds directly and lettuce loves the cooler temperature so it should Thrive here in this rosemary plant a steel I found at Trader Joe’s and to top it all off we’re adding more soil and don’t forget to water your transplants thoroughly let that water drip out it helps the soil settle and fills any air pockets or gaps plants like to feel secure in their new home so this step is essential to reduce the transplant shock and how would you make the most of this balcony would you do anything differently I’d love to hear the crops you would grow just leave us a comment below now that all of our plants are snug in their new homes it’s time for some final checks I’m removing any yellowed leaves ensuring the soil is nicely settled and carefully inspecting each transplant to make sure they’re all set to thrive in their fresh surroundings I’m also filling in those empty spots with some seeds to make the most of this Garden space and always label your plants and note where you’ve planted your seeds trust me with time it’s easy to forget labeling keeps your garden organized so now that this Garden transformation is complete I’m absolutely thrilled with how everything turned out I came back 44 days later to assess Jed and Lauren’s balcony and let’s just take a moment to Marvel at how this Garden transformed over the last 44 days growing your own food takes time patience and nurturing and we did start with smaller plants and a ton of seeds and this once ordinary balcony has been transformed into an edal oasis boasting an impressive array of plant varieties we’re talking two types of tomatoes three varieties of Peppers two kinds of Basil three diverse types of lettuce and an herb lineup that includes rosemary sage mint cilantro oregano and Thyme all of this on a compact balcony it proves that so much can be achieved even on a small balcony with limited space and just a handful of pots let’s talk about the cost of this Garden transformation this entire transformation came together for around $350 if you think that’s a lot of money just stick around I got you most of this budget $225 went to buying two tall pots and three hanging baskets $42 for three bags of soil and one bag of organic fertilizer $36 on seeds to grow 18 different plants and just $2.50 for an established rosemary plant from Trader Joe’s if you need basic tools we’re looking at roughly 50 bucks gardening shears a watering can a pair of gloves and a hand shovel and if you’re on a tighter budget don’t hesitate to skip the fancy pots and hanging baskets that’s what we spent most of the money on you can repurpose bags that you accumulate from grocery stores as long as they have drainage they’ll work and they’re free My First Year garding all I used were grocery
