Why is this pup turning brown?

First pic is now, second is when I got it last week. A friend gave me a pup off her plant and she gave it fresh soil and water. I left it be on a windowsill with bright indirect light and I just checked it, and it’s brown at the base 🙁 it’s leaves were soft so I started bottom watering it, until I realized it could maybe be from overwatering, so I stopped and figured I should ask this sub. So what do I do? Should I report it into my succulent soil, or wait so I don’t stress it out? Water or no water? I’m so very new to this, pls help!

Thank you for posting to r/plantclinic!

A common problem with cacti and succulents is etiolation. This is when a succulent stretches or becomes leggy. Reply with “!etiolation” for advice.

my aloe turns brownish from direct sun and draught. watering it should help if it’s been dry for a while.

Definitely overwatering. It’s also in the wrong kind of soil, so it will stay wet too long. It may also be buried a little too deeply.

Keep in mind with this type of plant that even if the soil seems dry, that doesn’t mean it’s ready to be watered. The leaves themselves are filled with water. I would wait for them to show signs of needing water, then giving it a good drink.
