if you want to grow a successful garden a couple of things you should really pay attention to is the way the garden is laid out and how you place your plants especially when it comes to growing in a small space so today I’m going to talk to you about the reasons behind why I have redesigned this space why I have laid out this new new design the way I did according to the light and and the space why I have placed the plants the way I did and then I’ll show you how I planted tight spaces and moving larger plants so that you can have a successful start this season I can’t wait to use these tools to plant the garden later they were sent to me by Centurion they are the sponsor of today’s video Centurion focuses on making gardening tools that are affordable and durable so that you can create the garden that you want I can’t wait to show you guys how I’ll be utilizing these to plant in my awkward space or if you want to see how these tools can help me transplant in my small space you can go right to it first I want to talk to you the reasonings behind why I have laid out this new design the way I did let’s go this is an east facing Garden that means we’re only getting about half a day of sun and then a couple hours before Sunset so the Sun starts from this direction and it goes over the house so the place that actually gets more like full sun is just the little corner over here that’s why the idea of rebuilding this space has been with me for over a year now and I’m so excited that I’m finally able to uh put this together with the help with some proper tools it really helps help to speed up the the pace especially when I was fine-tuning the curved parts of the edging which normally would take me a lot longer to do but this time I was using the drain Spade which has this thin slightly curved head and it cuts like butter creating that nice smooth edging that I was looking for so it made the entire process just a lot easier for me to make adjustments to my design so the space that I’m redesigning it used to be just more like lawn and then I started cutting a section of the front corner out to grow some plants in the ground also got just a bunch of container pots you know just pots lined up when it comes to designing a space you really want to pay attention to the light where the sun rises and sets uh if you don’t know how it is maybe spend different times uh of the day to to mark down you know how the light is traveling so that you can plan accordingly for my particular Garden is um on the east side and uh with a small space everything is just so close to the house that the house tend to shade out you know at least half of the day if you have a self facing Garden it’s definitely more advantaged to you if you like to grow more like sunling plants but that doesn’t mean it won’t work for you if you have like a North or an east-facing Garden you might have a smaller section of the space that would get more Sun than others so you have to really mark down those places to know what kind of plants would like that type of lighting after understanding the lighting you have to think about how you’re growing it if they’re on Race beds or in the ground if you’re doing yourself uh just all depends on your budget and um what kind of materials you can get so I decided on something that’s durable and also really easy to put together which is something that I’m sure you guys have seen many times um are these sort of um metal beds you just screw them on with nuts and bolts so it’s super easy to do but I did have to first level level the ground because this space is slightly on a slope and um this is on the lower part of the slope the reason I decided to do the eled is because I wanted to wrap around the corner of the garden and um the corner space is actually where it gets the most light to elevate the space would also allow more light for the plants everything that’s like more like wants really bright light more sun it’s got to be out here in the front side of the garden so I picked up a small L-shaped bed and then added the leftover pieces of these uh beds from previous projects one side of the L bed is about 10 ft long and then I’m starting with growing in the ground now this ground planting space is actually echoing that shape of the L bed so it’s kind of got this repeated uh pattern I’m really excited about this idea because it’s going to allow me to grow more food and also it makes total sense to have something like a taller bed behind uh where the sun is um Rising so the sun is rising here it’s going to hit all like the plants that are in like directly planted in the ground and then you’re going to get plants that love even more sun they’re going to be on the taller bed okay so now let’s talk about plant placements the way I think about uh how to arrange plants is sort of like people taking a group picture you want to not block each person that’s in the shot so it’s the same idea when it comes to planting right you want to put the shorter plants in the front so the back plants would not get shaded out especially if they are the sunling plants if you want to create shade then obviously you would put something uh taller in the front um so yeah you do the opposite but yeah let’s talk a little bit about my space the reasoning behind why I’ve planted it this way hopefully that would help you understand uh the reasoning behind it so this corner is for the extremely Sun loving plants like the Caper Bush here and then the Tomato obviously loves the Sun but it can grow quite tall so all these ones that can remain short or can be easily pruned and they don’t mind getting pruned can all kind of stay in the front side and then with the taller things behind when you’re putting plants in you just got to know you know what kind of lighting it likes like more sun or more shade or how big and how tall how wide the plant wants uh will get roughly so you have a more like an idea of like space itially how much you should space each plant apart sunflowers do not require full sun like 6 hours of Sun some would just be like 3 to four hours they’re happy with uh so yeah just make sure you read the tags oh and there’s this awkward space that I got here not really awkward but like this narrow space you can see I’ve scooted the metal bed about a foot away from the border just because I wanted to maximize the growing space and just leave everything that likes to be in like a lot more sun and like maybe root sensitive or prone to rot to stay up top and then on the bottom I can get some sun or part sun sort of plants growing in this space here ideally you wouldn’t want to plant something like this taller than the bed to be in the front but this Rose has been with me for years now guys so I don’t want to move it what I can do is because roses actually encourage new blooms on the new growth so I’m just going to try to prune back regularly after they Bloom each time to maintain the size in this space on the ground I’m also going to be planting the same idea as the one I explained earlier the front here everything more relatively short and the taller things going behind uh Sun chokes I’m going to keep it in a pot just because the the roots are going to get too crazy going everywhere if you’re still not sure how you should place your plants uh my suggestion is to first put in the plants that take up the most room the biggest plants and then see how much more room you got left to fill in the the rest say like the smaller plants can kind of think of those as like fillers now let me give you a few tips on how I like to transplant for smaller plants I generally like to use smaller tools it just makes more sense that way here I have a couple of telescopic tools this one is the three prong and ho and this is the TR because these ones can extend I like to use it for kind of difficult to reach places also it doesn’t hurt my back trying to constantly you know keep it at a curve and and you know work the tools got the heat treated heads and it’s got this powder coated paint on which helps to resist rust usually that’s really helpful for me because if things weren’t treated with this I would leave it outside uh for like overnight and it’ll get rusty got the steel handles and there really comfy uh non-slip grip so I just twist or untwist and then Twist Again to extend see when I’m in this sort of awkward space and I want to plant something reaching that far back I can easily do it with a tool like this or I can shorten it and get to this spot easily so that’s where I’ll start transplanting right here to make my job easier of course I can just remove this fence however it was really difficult to push these fences in um the soil is just really hard here so I’m just going to avoid that by kind of working through you know just putting this through and um get to digging I actually don’t want that one I’m going to dig this one out when you’re trying to dig up a plant move a little further away from it and um give it a good ply okay so of course I can use a larger shovel to do the job but sometimes it’s just easier to use something lightweight especially if I’m transplanting multiple plants so when I’m using a tool like this that really saves my back okay I think that looks pretty good okay now I’m just going to come in to back fill I just prefer to use the hoe then I can kind of stomp it around okay that’s one down all right next I’m going to be transplanting this Lily it’s a little bigger than the other one so I’m going to use it a larger tools this is a fiberglass dandle drain spade and uh this is what I would use to transplant larger things like trees shrubs uh or even anything that’s like at least about 5 gallons especially with this tempered steel blade it’s Arch it really helps to penetrate deeper into the soil it’s got the Chrome plated steel coupling and just overall feels really nice and sturdy right here it’s got this forward turn step really helps when I kick that in maybe a little deeper what’s nice about the arch is that when you’re penetrating in the soil it has a less tendency to break as many roots it’s just more forgiving whereas you know working with a tool that has like this pointy tip tends to be a little more aggressive sounds like I’ve hit concrete oh I got it what the heck is this doing in here gosh there it is and more glass this is why you should wear gloves when you’re working in the garden all right let’s test this out yes this think still oh crap does not want to come out I think I’m just going to sacrifice this oh perfect it’s got this I’m going to try using this multi-purpose Garden weeder it does so much more than just weeding okay this actually became one of my super handy dandy garden tools look how it’s serrated very deep seray and it it’s got like this sharp um cut on the other end so it really helps to kind of cuts into it as it penetrates the soil it’s also got this really comfy grip uh okay let’s try it yes okay now I’m going to take this rated side and just kind of cut down like this [Music] okay the weer also comes with these measurements so I can measure up how deep this goes looks like it’s all the way in this is meant for planting smaller things also that’s deep enough the measurements would also be very helpful if you’re planting seeds this is a lamp’s ear they grow relatively short I’m just going to keep this sort of like a filler in this space eventually I can divide these and pop them um along the sides cuz I think it would be nice to just have them as like almost like border plants aside from planting I also use the weer to remove weeds and unnecessary grass growing on the borders after putting those garden scraps in the compost bin it’s time to move this giant pepper that’s been with me for two Winters now I’m using the drain Spade to move it as you can see that nice curve uh on the heads really helps to dig and go underneath that plant and it’s time to transplant it into the ground after transplanting I’m so thankful even the next day I didn’t see any transplant shot I did moov it on a gloomy day also added some verer worm castings on a bottom to reduce transplant shock also I sprayed it down with the earthworm casting teas and finally I transplanted the last plant this is the Japanese parsley and then I just put some cocoa cor Mulch on top to match the raised bed I am so happy that this part of the garden makeover is almost done I just need a run water irrigations and then it’ll be completely done I let me just put this away first by the way this does come with um a sheath and then it’s got this part that you can hang on the Belt I don’t have a belt so I’m not going to use it but I can’t wait to see these plants grow in and give you guys updates on that thank you so much curan for sponsoring today’s episode sending those tools out to me really have made my job a whole lot easier if you guys are interested in any of the tools that I used I’ll link them down below for you thank you so much you guys for joining me out here in the garden I’ll see you next time bye
