american chestnut or something else?

This chestnut tree has been in my parents’ front yard since I was a baby (I remember it when it was still shorter than I was — now it’s gotta be around 30+ feet).

They have another sapling in their front yard that they’ve since planted and we think both this tree and that sapling are American Chestnuts, but honestly, I’m not entirely sure. When I look at the image identification guides, I’m torn between whether this is an American or European chestnut.

It’s in mid-Michigan (if helpful). And the larger one pictured here does produce fruit (all fuzzy/spiky little balls) and has for at least a decade.
