8+ years ago we were told the crack in the bark of this redbud was going to be the ultimate death of the tree. Today my husband noticed an ant colony had moved in. Is there anything we can do? Anything we should do? I don’t even know if the ants are hurting the tree or if they are a harbinger of bad tidings.
She seems healthy otherwise. Was covered in flowers this spring and has a beautiful canopy. I absolutely adore this tree.

The ants are the result of the rotting wood. They only chew through dead material so no need to worry about them.
