Ok, what do I need to do to these stairs to stop weeds?

I have these wooden stairs with dirt for steps, the weeds just won't quit and it looks a mess 100% of the time

what do I need to do? Replace the dirt with gravel? Weed mat? Mulch? Low effort paving ideas? What would you do?
Thanks!

You could try killing off what is there and putting down a pre emergent, but the stuff that’s growing on the edges is likely to spread into them either way. That pic makes it look like you get a decent amount of rain, so it’s going to be a battle regardless of mulch or gravel.

Either plant things you don’t consider weeds there, or rebuild the stairs so there’s no sign of any soil left.

Those stairs are pieces of wood held in place by metal looks like tree stakes. I like that.

Those stairs are soil. Looks like you are in a very fertile/tropical area. Suggest you need to have something in the soil to prevent weed growth. Could be mulch or stones. While everyone on here hates on weed barrier, putting something under the mulch/stones like barrier, cardboard, etc will at least slow anything coming up in there.

Those aren’t stairs, those are half-*ssed pieces of wood acting as little retaining walls. You first need to build better steps. You’ll spend more trying to clean up the steps than it would cost you to put in better ones.

Only concrete will do, and only for a few years. Mother nature is a bish.
