No Lawns

Death and Destruction (and a ๐ŸŒˆ)

Site preparation for converting .5 acres (7a) from lawn to meadow continues! We did a second application of an aquatic approved herbicide to clear the way for planting in fall. Between now and then we will see what comes back and potentially spot treat if needed.

Late last year I got a considerable bonus for winning an award at work, I used it to advance the meadow plans by choosing to plant plugs rather than seed, as Iโ€™m looking for a more intentional grouping look than a more intermingled one.

What started out as a project to save me mowing on my sloped front yard has turned into a budding interest in eco gardening / rewilding and restoring ecosystem. Iโ€™m reading and watching everything I can get my hands on, and Iโ€™ve enrolled in courses with the NC Arboretum to learn botany basics and more about our native plants and wildlife! ๐Ÿฅน I am working with a company here in WNC but still trying to learn everything I can!

The brown lawn is super ugly, and I have a sign out so my neighbors donโ€™t think Iโ€™m insane. Our prep started in early spring and will continue through late September / October when weโ€™ll plant. I know it will be worth it!

I put together many of the key plants into a spreadsheet in case anyone is interested or near the zone Iโ€™m in.

My front yard (pictured) has a sloped very sunny dry part where the main meadow flowers will go. A creek also runs along my property line, where we planted hundreds of livestakes and native shrubs to shade the stream and provide habitat. The back yard is shaded and weโ€™ll be replacing the lawn with alternative grasses there as well.

Thanks for looking ๐ŸŒพ
