E obesas with suspicious orange coloring

I’ve got a pair of obesa with a rusty orange coloring on their crowns. It looks like damage not natural corking- I’m thinking fungus or some kind of small insect like mites or scale? If anyone has ideas on what the problem could be or how they’d go about treating I’d appreciate any advice
