Can someone help identify what is causing this tree to crumble from the inside? There are two holes at the base that are through the tree, but some of the trunk is still connected and not soft. The leaves and branches look healthy.
Is there any remedy to save the tree or is it now on a slow path to death?

That looks to be a small mammal that is digging at the decaying matter to look for insects. Armadillos, opossums, skunks, and raccoons will all do this
