Begonias

Will this 30+ year old overgrown begonia grow back?

I have this old begonia growing with a dracaena that I inherited from my mom. Both plants have gotten super leggy and just don’t look like they are thriving. My question is if I propagate the apical leaves of the begonia and cut off everything else about 6” or 7” above the dirt will it come back? The base of the stem is really woody(?) and not sure if it will sprout new growth from parts that old It does have some new growth from the base that’s a few inches tall with a tiny leaf but it’s been like that for months.

  1. This looks like it could be a Lucerna begonia – tough as old boots OG angel wing cane!

    They can definitely bounce back

I have one that’s 15+ y old and wasn’t looking great due to getting too much light and heat – i moved it somewhere less bright but still with light, and it’s amazing the transformation it’s undergone… Looks like a whole new plant!

For yours, I’d consider repotting and getting it into its own pot – Begonia roots are very fine Vs dracaena, so it might be quite a dramatic difference in root mass when you do get them out of the pot!
