Found this log with this big slash inside of the rings. Never seen anything like it. What could cause it? A lighting bolt? A fungus? Some cut or damage?
Back when that branch was just a single ring in width, it grew a side branch. The side branch died after a couple years (was probably in a shady area of the canopy) and the main branch kept growing wider until it completely enveloped the dead side branch.
