what’s growing on gardeners on today’s two-minute Garden tip I’m going to show you how I stop my fabric grow bags from drying out too quickly in the summer heat I love growing annual vegetables in fabric grow bags they’re large affordable and the breathable fabric provides great aeration to the roots and 8 to 9 months a year this works out in my favor but during the hottest months of the summer it works against me because they tend to dry out a little too quickly so I’ve devised a simple two-step solution to help prevent them from drying out tooo fast step one is to install shade cloth overhead now what you see above here is 40% shade cloth I have dozens of grow bags growing underneath the shade cloth and this does a fantastic job at lowering the sun intensity lowering the UV index and keeping things artificially cool so there is less evaporation in all of my grow bags and that has tremendously helped reduce the evaporation so they stay moist for a longer period of time and work in tandem with the mulch layer that is in the bottom of all of my grow bags they now make it through the day without needing irrigation whereas if I had them growing out in the open they’d need to be watered every single day sometimes twice during the hottest periods of the summer and the other thing I did was I put down this white tarp it’s a 6t x 40t long tarp and it is underneath all of my individual grow bags and I pulled the sides of the tarp up because black fabric grow bags will obviously attract heat and heat up more in the Sun so when I have this white tarp sticking up it actually makes the grow bags cooler because white tends to reflect heat so all of my grow bags are operating underneath a cooler environment but this tarp also has a side benefit I have drip irrigation running to all of my individual containers and here in the Southeast we get torrential thunderstorms sometimes daily and sometimes I accidentally over irrigate I let them run too long or we get a heavy thunderstorm and that washes all of the nutrients out of my grow bags well without this tarp underneath all of those nutrients would leech out of the grow bags and into the sandy soil so I would lose all of the nutrients this tarp is waterproof so when the containers wash out they actually sit in the puddle of water and then reabsorb those nutrients back into the system let me show you yesterday we received a heavy afternoon thunderstorm and that washed out my grow bags and you can see evidence of the water there now yesterday this was probably a/ in of standing water but my grow bags reabsorb the water throughout the day because today was very hot and dry so I didn’t need to water my grow bags at all today it retained all of that moisture in there so instead of having all of that water wash out into the soil it reabsorbed the nutrients this has been a fantastic way for me to keep my grow bags moist for a longer period of time time and not lose all of those nutrients every time it rains keep in mind this could be a problem if you received an extreme amount of rainfall if you got inches and inches of rain you don’t want these grow bags sitting in standing water for days on end you could suffocate and drown the roots so what I did was this area of my garden slopes downward it’s a light downhill grade so I didn’t tie up the back of the tarp so if we received absolutely torrential rain it would actually run off and it wouldn’t contain all of that rain so this has really worked to my advantage now we haven’t had any substantial rain events like that this season but we are liable to get it in the event that I simply wash out my grow bags a little bit or we get an afternoon thunderstorm I wind up preserving all of the nutrients if we got absolutely horrible rain where inches and inches fell it would drain away so my plants wouldn’t drown if you’re interested in the shade cloth the tarp or the fabric grow bags I will place links to all of the items down in the video description they come in all different sizes this system has been incredibly efficient and successful for me and that’s today’s tumin a garden tip if you’re new to the Channel please consider subscribing and hitting the Bell to receive new video notifications and check out our Amazon storefront and spread shop in the video description for a list of the gardening products I use and awesome custom designed apparel and other gear your support is greatly appreciated

  1. The tarp idea is great. I am only using 4 ten gallon bags this year. I put them in a kiddie pool and drilled holes about an inch above the ground. I have corn growing in the bags. They are doing great. For health reasons I had to down size my garden.

  2. Do you do anything to the grow bags between plantings or before you store them for the winter?

  3. Whoop, look out….theres an Engineer in the garden! Yet another simple and clever idea! 👍🏻 I believe I’ve made my soil mixture a bit too loose this season and the moisture is not holding well. Love your methods of finding solutions. I bought all 25 gal grow bags this year….bigger is better.

  4. Southeast? What state and zone? I’m concerned about shade cloth due to high temps and high humidity. I heard shade cloth can make it worse. Anyone know? Temps in ok and Texas are often greater than 100 with very high humidity. Tia

  5. Great idea with the tarp for the grow bags. I was thinking of trying a shower curtain under my bags, but I think the tarp might be more effective. Thanks for sharing!

  6. My husband just waits to see what I need to order every time you upload a video. But he enjoys the food!!

  7. On the subject of shade cloth how does it hold up in the wind? Where I live we get extreme wind and we get it often. It has taken up people's carports and it has taken up their sheds. Some places we even get those dust devils

  8. I have used a similar method going on 3 years. I bought 10 kiddie pools at Walmart that were marked down incorrectly to $2 each. I put 5-6 10 gallon grow bags in them and fill the pools with 2-3 inches of water. It has worked wonderfully and my plants have grown much better. I have not tried the shade cloth yet as my pools are not close together.

  9. I am a Professional Grower one of the best in the world by far. We Do NOT use "grow bags" unless our rainfall or irrigation is absurdly high because they dry out too fast from the sides to maintain anything remotely close to optimal hydration of substrate. they were a gimmick sold to amateur cultivators based on the concept of "side pruning" and "aeration." Both true, But both are not essential (root aeration is, side aeration is not essential and we obviously aerate out roots with substrate composition and irrigation movement) whereas the water lost to evaporation constantly from the porous sides IS essential. No grow bags. Throw them away and Start over….

  10. I want to grow napier grass for cows but because of rain it becomes poisonous. After eating that cows usually dies. That's why a rain protecting system is needed

  11. Want to grow napier grass for cows, but rainwater increases nitrogen level and after eating thay cow dies. That why a rain protecting system is needed.

  12. I just put upside down beer bottles in all my containers, at the start of garden season this year, via terracotta watering spikes. I haven’t talked about it or recommend it to anyone yet because I wanted to really see if it helped. It does. I can now say I’ll use this technique from now on. Cheaper than an Oya. I started with ten and now have 30😂

  13. I’m definitely getting the tarp for my 100 gallon grow bags.
For my 1 gal grow bags for my herbs in my porch I use a potting soil plastic bag turned inside out.

  14. Great tips! Any ideas on a less expensive replacement for the tarp? My container garden is spread out across my patio. I would need multiple tarps.

  15. @2MinuteGardenTips – does the extra moisture draw a lot of flies and mosquitoes? If so, have you found any solution for that? I’m sooo over the bugs lol here in western IL. Thought maybe I’d try your solutions in other areas where water keeps pooling. 😂
