Backyard fire pit with sand

Hi experts! So, I live in Florida on a lake and am considering adding a sand section with a fire pit / sand box for toddler to my backyard similar in size to the example in the photo. I read a lot about what you all mentioned on this sub about debris, cleanliness upkeep, continuously adding sand, rain/sprinklers ruining it, wind blowing it away and sand attracting ants and cats. But other than ALL OF THAT, if I’m still considering it, (I’m obsessed with the “beachy”look and feel so it may be worth it to me) is there anything else I haven’t thought about or should consider😆? Would gravel be a better option? I have grass now.

It will immediately be the new favorite litter box for all the neighborhood cats. I wouldn’t recommend it. If you want sand for kids to play in get something you can put a cover on to keep cats out.

Isn’t ringworm a consideration in warm, humid, sandy areas? Also consider what you’d have to do on the off chance that it doesn’t work out in the long run. How would you get rid of that much sand? It’s easy to dump a truckload of sand, less easy to shovel it all back up and dispose of it. I think dumpster companies will only let you get rid of a small amount (at least in my area)

Unless you plan on covering it, that’s going to be such a mess when it rains.

i live in Savannah and used to live on the beach on Tybee Island, and when I look at that pic, all i see is feet dragging that sand inside. You live in Florida, you know what I’m talking about! I can’t stand to get stuff on my feet as I walk around indoors, so i mean if you don’t mind sweeping/vacuuming at least once every day or have a housekeeper to do it, then go for it.

Also this seems like a commitment. Like a lot easier to get it in there than to get it out if you want something different down the road. But our soil is mostly sand, so maybe you can just spread it around lol if that time ever comes.

I don’t know, having said that, I feel that you are really excited about this project and on that note, I think you should go for it. Just be willing to adapt to sand being everywhere, or i guess i should say adapt to removing the sand that will get everywhere. Good luck to you!
