Tomatoes

Where did we go wrong?

First photos are dead plants, last few are when they were healthy babies 🙁 We were gifted tomato plants that were grown from seedlings from an expert and long-time gardener friend. I wasn’t sure on the exact varieties, but they initially produce small to midsize baby tomatoes. I am totally new to the world of vegetable gardening, so please forgive me. Two of the plants completely died and we arent getting fruit from any of our sic plants.

We are in zone 7b. We prepared our raised boxes (that had been used for years by previous homeowner) by tilling and utilizing composted leaves. We planted in early May, and initially the tomatoes THRIVED. We pruned off suckers and did the trellis method. We used a moisture meter to water and we fertilized. We get 6ish hours of full sun midday to afternoon above the boxes. The plants are complete losses and we cannot understand what happened. After yielding some delicious initial baby tomatoes, they both went yellow and died essentially overnight after a big storm. This is a learning lesson so if anyone could provide insight that would be great.

Additional info: fertilized initially with general miracle grow for gardens, switched to 5-10-10 for veggies 🙁

It looks like nutrient burn to me. How much fertilizer do you put on one plant, and how often?

  3. Maybe your soil? It looks soggy and very compacted. Roots have a hard time thriving. They need air and voids to grow. Mix about 30% perlite in there.
