Cliveas dying in one spot

Hey all. Bit of a weird one. My cliveas are dying specifically at the front of my garden bed. I’m not really sure what is going on given it’s fine at the back.

Could the underlay be too clogged with leaves and the water isn’t getting through? They are beneath a tree.

Frost bite maybe, I can see the heat sink of the bricks behind protecting them in the rear.

Might be getting too much water settling into the soil there at bottom of the slope.

I’m all for gardens up against the house, but my lord I hope you’ve got good termite prevention.

It reminds me of my nans house, turns out the entire wall behind the garden was gone.

Sorry for not being entirely garden related.
