Monsoon took out our mesquite….what questions should we ask the tree folks?

Can our mesquite be saved?

Huge monsoon with 80mph winds took out a beautiful old mesquite tree of ours a couple days ago in Tucson, AZ. We're out of the country visiting family but our neighbor sent us these photos. Unfortunately, we won't be able to have anyone come take a look for a few more weeks, when we get back.

We'd love to know beforehand though—is this poor tree doomed? Or is there any chance we can save it? Does anyone have any advice on what questions we should ask when we do have someone come by?

Thanks so much!

    It’s a tough call.

It looks like half the reason it fell over is because it has a lot of weight hanging out wide and so was easy to push over. If you trim off some branches and are able to prop it back up (easier said than done) and put something in place to hold it while it re-establishes itself it may well be saveable. This all depends on whether the root structure is still mainly intact.

The earlier you get on to this the better as the disturbed soil around the roots wont be compacted. If you leave it for a few weeks it may settle a little making it difficult to get it upright again. It really requires a closer look from a pro to make this call.
