Plant Propagation

Golden pothos props developing leaves before roots?

As the title states. I took all these cuttings from a leafless golden pothos vine and a couple of them have gotten roots but most of them appear to be pushing out leaves before rooting? This is my first time propagating anything, although I did plant the mother from a propagation ~18 years ago (😱). I’ve been keeping the leafless propagations in a ziploc bag with some moist moss (changed it out for damp paper towels instead recently) on a heat mat under some grow lights. It’s been a little over 3 weeks. All in all, is this normal, or should I change something? Something of note is that the two that have rooted rooted after I changed out the moss for paper towel. Anyways, any guidance is much appreciated, thanks!

Sometimes it be like that. I have 17 cuttings going right now and sometimes they push out leaves before roots, but I’ve only done water props. Got a moss box ima try after I get home from vacation, but plants can’t read, so they do whatever they want.

  2. Often the wet stick portion itself won’t ever put out a root but instead give all its energy to the auxiliary bud’s growth. The new growth portion will shoot out a root in time and that’ll take over as the nutrient/water uptake. Best to keep up humidity through this time to keep the prop hydrated.
