Composting

I have loads of rotten pine in my yard that had to be 5-7 years old, can I use it as brown material in compost so long as it’s broken up?

Burning it is annoying, it has to go, and it'll cost money to take to the dump but my sister really likes composting so I figure if we can compost it, we should

Yeah it would be a great source of carbon. Or just bury it and do hügelkultur with it.

It would have to be broken up pretty good. Even good size mulch takes a long time to break down in compost. But yeah. You can also leave it hole or break it up and bury it in the bottom of a raised bed. One issue I’ve had and I know other people have it with large wood chips in compost is, when you plant seeds in that compost or mixed that compost with some type of soil. Seeds have trouble sprouting when they have to go around large pieces of wood chips or if there’s a big wood chip above the seed, it might not even sprout. There’s pretty simple ways around that issue but just keep that in mind.
