Red maple growth

We planted this tiny red maple in October 2023. As you can see, it was only a few inches tall.

Now in July 2024, it is well over 5 feet tall!

I’m obsessed with it. Is this average growth or is it really taking off? Should we encourage or prune it in any particular way (we have not touched it)?

  1. Very common that is why I always tell customers plant small.
Keep one dominant leader on the tree the rest should be supporting structure

Maple doing what maples do, grow rapidly with structural defects. Half of the crown size is a defect (codominance). Never allow defect to become larger; prune them as soon as you see them. Developmental pruning on maples is important. This will take you seconds to correct but when it’s bigger, a lot more pruning time will be required because of vigor and opposite arrangement. I agree with the advice clubraf gave you.
