How can trim this small leaved lime tree by 50%?

I love the tree a few years ago but it’s out of control and now taking up a massive section of my yard.

I believe it’s a small leaved lime tree – Tilia cordata

I wouldn’t remove more than 25% or so of the canopy in one year. Trim some, let it recover, trim more next season.

First year I’d prune most of the lower hanging branches from the ground up. I’d wait until winter to prune.

I’ve heard people say never prune more than 15% of a tree in a year and I’ve heard up to 1/3rd which is too much in my opinion.

If you feel like you are exceeding ~20% this year, then come back next winter and do more.
