Homesteading

I am buying 70 acres, 15 of which is cleared. Long term plan to build a house somewhere on it. There is a 30 x 40 building on it w/ concrete floors and a bathroom. Considering turning it into a temporary living space w/ 2 bedrooms, living area, kitchenette, etc. Anyone done something similar?

Where I live barndominiums are pretty popular. Part house, part barn. If I was to do it over, that’s what I would do.

I have not done it but I absolutely would. I knew a couple who lived in a tent while building their house. The people who built the house I’m currently in lived in the log cabin style barn while building. Go for it. You’re ahead of my examples with running water.

Doubt zoning will allow it. I know here even just putting a building like this up to house my tractor and farm truck before I built my house was a headache because they thought I’d be turning it into a barndominium.

About 50 years ago when my neighbour bought their plot they paid for the concrete to be poured and built a garage at one end of the pad. They lived in that for a year with 5 kids while they built their house. As long as the weather permits and you’re near and tidy nobody will stop you.

I would wait to see if the concrete sweats on hot days. Sometimes for garages or sheds, people don’t insulate under the concrete and you can have sever condensation issues for a house.

Do you have power, water, and sewer at that building?

This is bad ass. And a temporary living space seems doable! Even if you simply park a camper inside.

Go for it. I’d recommend walling off an oversized bedroom and trying to condition the bedroom and bathroom with tighter tolerances than the remaining barn. Add insulation and exterior grade doors to the bedroom to help keep critters out.

We put a camper in our building and ran the vents for the camper out the wall. We did this while we built the house. Once house was built we sold the camper and had our shop back.
