A G. album and M. hortenseae hybrid. Mom sheaths while dad splits, birthing a freak with an ugly leaf change process. I gave it a good water a few days ago, and it must’ve been enough to nourish the new growth to break through its old body.. Second pic was 5 months ago, you can see the fissure that would soon become a window to the new leaf…

Hammer’s description seems to be spot on!
“because of its schizoid nature it will not sheath neatly (its father, Gibbaeum album, does not sheath) and it looks messy for much of the year. The new bodies are usually born awkwardly, Caesarian-style.”
