How to improve soil with mulch without killing ground cover?

My two problems with my yard is that it’s patchy and there are some areas that dip with big cracks (dry soil) and is not level. I was thinking about ordering chip drop to fill my whole yard with mulch to help improve soil and level it out.

However, there are areas that have filled in nicely with horseherb and other ground cover.

If I spread mulch over the whole yard, will it kill the ground cover? What is the best approach? I am a newbie.

Chip drop is an absolutely astounding amount of mulch and it is not aged at all, and can contain quite a few small branches.

Which is to say I would not recommend getting a chip drop delivered to try to supplement your soil unless you want to kill / cover your whole lawn.

As for how to fix it, I’m not sure. I’m in the same pickle. Never gave a shit about a lawn before! Dogs… they really take over your life.

I’ve read that sand is a good way to fill in low spots and I’ve read that raking in a bit of compost is a good way to fill low spots. My stepdad uses garden soil, works for his immaculate Zoysia lawn.
