African Violets

Just couldn’t wait!

I got half of my new babies in their new pots. I was going to wait a few days. But in rummaging around in my AV supplies I found these teeeeny Oyama pots and just had to use them. I bought these maybe 20 years ago. Aside from using a couple to start cuttings, they’ve sat gathering dust. I have a hard time handling such small plants and pots and usually opt for 2 inch pots with wicks. Oyama pots are a wicking type “self watering” pot that use perlite as the wick. The inner pot is 1.5 inches excluding the rim. If you can find them, I heartily recommend them. Since I didn’t have a banana, I used an espresso cup and teaspoon for size comparison. The item above the teaspoon is a spoon for espresso that has been commandeered for use on mini AVs. I couldn’t live without it.

Hello fellow Oyama user! I have a few of these I use for young minis. I did a presentation on the pots and their history at my violet club.

The Oyama family recently sold the business to someone in the violet community, but I don’t know what the new owner’s plans are. Find a manufacturer and make more pots, I hope.
