Water prop, which I’ve done successfully many times in the past, only I waited later than usual this time.
I’m not sure whether this is some kind of mold or fungus, or if this is just what roots look like when they begin developing more? Google wasn’t helpful. It didn’t rinse off, if that matters. And it’s not really soft.

I don’t grow gardenias but wish I did! I am going to guess those irregular things at the bottom of the stem is callus, “[Tips for Rooting Perennial Cuttings](https://www.growertalks.com/Article/?articleid=23092)”. Callus is good because it is the plant responding positively.
Not mold it’s growth tissue that turns into root. Someone said the name on this sub yesterday but I fpegot the technical name.
