Hydrangea prop – roots growing above perlite? Chances of success?

Hello from an extremely novice propper.

I saw an interesting hydrangea prop method online where you essentially fully enclose the cutting in a 3 cup system and essentially forget about it. I realize there are likely easier ways to prop, but I treated this as a science experiment.

I took my cutting below a node July 6, dipped in rooting hormone, and shoved it in a 90:10 perlite, peat moss mix. Fast forward to now you can see whitish fibers coming out of the stem where it meets the perlite.

Are these roots? If they are roots, are there likely more roots below (at the end of the cutting)? What about the browning of the stem? Does this indicate it’s rotting from the moisture level?

Love to hear your thoughts!
