Am new to all this, but been reading here about exposing the root flare, so tried to do that when planting this tree (its about 1.8 m tall), noticed this and reckoned it looked pretty bad. I live far from the nursery so sent them these pics, and yeah, he said not to worry eventually they will straighten out. I was quite doubtful, just want to make sure I can push for a refund really

Shitty nursery stock is one of the biggest killers of landscaping trees. The other one is weed eaters. Everyone talks about planting depth and mulch volcanoes , which can be devastating, but usually only if it is truly awful. Too deep and mulch volcanoes can kill a tree in just a couple years. Bad nursery stock usually presents itself after 15-20 years so you are good and well fucked by the time you realise your tree is crap

Yeah, that’s not how that works. If it was just one small root you could trim it, but that’s the main root bundle – you can’t trim that off. That tree is no good.
If you live in an area where you can find a tree farm, they’re more likely to grow trees in the ground rather than in pots. Then after you pick your tree they’ll pot it up for you for transport. It’s where your nurseries are getting their stock.

Roots can’t move around in the soil like worms. They just get thicker where they already are, and in this case they’ll strangle each other as they get thicker.

That things been grown in a plug or small container too long. That would end up in our nursery cull pile instantly. You don’t sell trees by selling dying trees.
