Homesteading

Buying 70 acres. The structures on the bottom are a 30×40 shop w/ concrete floors and a 30×50 barn. Has water and electric on property, no septic. I live 5 miles away, and don’t plan to move immediately, but am trying to figure out the quickest way to spend weekends on site. Toilet important for kid

  1. Depending on local zoning & enforcement, just dig an outhouse. If that isn’t an option, get a chemical bucket-type toilet (like for an RV) and use that.

Chemical toilet, cassette toilet or my favorite a composting toilet. Composting is pretty easy to build if you’re handy, should be able to find guides online.

Outhouse. Get a 50 gallon plastic drum and drill it full of holes, and use that to line the hole. It won’t cave in, it lets the moisture drain away, and makes it easy to clean out down the road.

Call the local septic service companies if code does not allow a composting toilet or you just don’t want to deal with it. A lot of them rent large tanks that they will then come out to service when needed. They will deliver the tank and pick it up when you are done. You can have a regular flush toilet and no fuss. They are very common on construction sites For the job site trailer.

My inlaws use one I think it costs them like $250 every 3 months or so.

In 1977 we cut the fence open drug in a single wide and got started. It was culture shock ( I was a 12 yo suburban kid ). Moved back 1 1/2 years ago to lots of remodeling and not as far out any longer. But heaven on earth.
