I've tried it in a few different spots in my apartment (no deck but south-facing windows in the northern hemisphere) … I even threw it out once but then put it on my shelf and watered it occasionally until it did the whole thing again.
Grow, make 2 to 4 leaves, drop all leaves, stick is life.
Any ideas?

Agreed. Needs the light to have enough energy to feed more leaves. Try a little fertilizer
it wants out of that miracle grow garbage they call soil and into a well draining mineral based one. i think. not sure what kind of plant that is but that’s what it says…
