The #1 Fig Every Gardener Can Grow For Big, Early Fig Harvests

On today’s 2 minute garden tip, I share the #1 fig every gardener can grow for big, early fig harvests! Growing figs can be challenging for growers with short summers, because figs need a long time to ripen. Some fig trees need 90-100 days or more to ripen! This fig variety is my earliest fig and ripens where other fig tree varieties fail!

Of course, I’m talking about Ronde de Bordeaux! What’s incredible about this fig is that not only is it an early fig tree, one of the earliest out there, but it has full flavor. The flavor is a deep berry resin flavor, similar to blackberries, molasses and caramel. It has the potential to become very syrupy, which you’ll see in the fig taste test at the end of the video! This fig can be grown in ground in Zone 6 or warmer, maybe down to 5b in some cases, and grown in containers in colder zones.

  1. I was only able to eat 1 fig from my tree this year! Raccoons ate the rest. Even before they were ripe 😡 The raccoons are very brave since my dog, Lily, passed last year.

  2. Can I grow that in Chicago? I have Chicago Hardy. I know you don’t like that one,but we get well below zero here and 1 fig didn’t come back this year. That fig looked delicious.

  3. Our Chicago just popped up a month and a half ago. We thought it died. Don't think there is time to get fruit.

  4. I want to grow a couple figs in pots. I'm in zone 7 . I looked for this verify you mentioned, but how can I get it? And how long would I have to grow a cutting before it can produce?

  5. I’m in Houston, and have a small Violet de Bordeaux that has ripened about 5 fruit already this year and my Celeste has had two as well. Is that early?

  6. I'm in Georgia does anyone no if it's a good idea to start sweet corn when a week of off an one rain for the week ?

  7. This is one variety that is on the top of my wish list to acquire. Really good looking fig. Thanks for sharing.

  8. Ooh I’m so excited! I just planted a Rhône de Bordeaux last fall. I’m a couple years away from a good harvest but so happy to hear you recommend this fig!

  9. My Fignominal fig (2nd year) has about 10 figs that are almost ready to pick. It had more but tree was struggling and I knocked off about a third. Worked as tree is now healthy and figs are ripening. 🎉

  10. I saw a documentary years ago about the rainforest and the life of a fig tree there. In the doc a wasp or bee would enter inside the fig and and lay eggs and as the larve grew and eventually leave the fig their motion would pollinate the 'flowers' inside the fig. Really interesting. Then ants would come but that's another story.

  11. Pardon me while i go bust my neighbor's kneecaps. He was so excited to give us some figs (which i have never even seen a fig before and had to Google how to eat them). They were GREEN. And FLAVORLESS. Dude, do you even know what your doing!? I need to tell him to check out this video. Those looked amazing and I'd like to try an ACTUALLY RIPE one now.

  12. Just got my first RDB and so excited about it. Planting question- being in zone 4 (middle of Minnesota) is it too late to plant a fig tree in ground? Should I just keep in a pot until next spring? Love your channel, learned so much from you.

  13. This one looks so jammy and delicious. This one and most small and medium size figs can be left on the tree to shrivele as long they have a tight close eye. Larger figs or figs with large eyes or splits easily can spoil on the tree from rain, water, or bugs.

As you said its an art, most people will learn it quickly as they taste and try figs at different ripeness levels.

  14. I am in the southwest Florida 10 B, I have two fig trees for about two years or so only have gotten a few figs,I just feel like it was too hot and humid here for them maybe. Or I’m doing something terribly wrong,We’ll have to look int this variety. Thanks for sharing.
