Composting

Is my compost cooked enough, or should I go longer?

I have a perforated trashcan with compost that's been cooking for a month. I filled it to the brim with mulched grass, evergreen trimmings, weeds, kitchen scraps, shredded paper, wood shavings and twigs. It got up to 140 for a number of days early on and has gradually gotten closer to ambient temperatures. It's now half full and hasn't really changed much in consistency or color for the past week or so.

I'd like to dump it on top of my large pile of stored compost at the point where keeping it in the trashcan would no longer provide any additional benefits so that I can start my next trashcan compost cook.

Based on the photos I linked, would y'all say this compost is good to toss with the rest of my compost, or should I let it continue to mature in the trashcan?

Definitely longer. It still has whole twigs, grasses, and leaves in it.

  2. Sift out the stuff that will sift out, start your new trashcan using whatever is left after sifting. That doesn’t look very ready at all to me, but some of it will be

Everything is composting all the time. It’s not going to stop just because you put it in a bigger pile

Hard to say without being there, but if you other heap is cooking along nicely, you can put that stuff in with it. Removing sticks is tedious, but they will not break down like the other stuff. But I can’t see that the sticks will stop the composting process in your other heap. Just my two cents.
