Brachychitons are semi-deciduous trees, they can reduce their canopies in the winter. I would wait until spring and see if your tree flushes with leaves. In other words, don’t panic.
I have anecdotally noticed that these trees are sensitive to herbicide misapplication. So if you or a neighbour, or the council, are using weed n feed on turf nearby, for example, it can cause leaf stunting in a brachychiton.
