Composting

Update: Composting on alpine mountain hut at 2200 meters

Hi again! Last year I tried composting our food waste in a plastic composting container but over the winter it broke under the pressure of a lot of snow. I also had no idea what I was doing. 🙂

After posting at the beginning of this season, I’ve set up two open bins. The pile on the right is the food waste from last season plus added brown from this season (mostly paper napkins and egg crates). The pile on the left is food waste from this season plus browns.

I’m occasionally turning the piles. Sometimes I wet them but usually it’ll rain every few days and it’ll get pretty wet. I don’t know the temperature and I don’t see any worms but there are some other bugs crawling around, mostly flys though.

How’s it looking? I think I’ll need to keep adding more browns. There’s an old shed up here and I discovered there is still a lot of hay inside. I could maybe add some of that to the piles. Also, should I be concerned that there aren’t any worms? To be honest I’m not even sure if there are worms living up here.

Thanks everyone for the advice before! I’m enjoying the process and hope I can keep it going. 🙂
