Neighbor’s weeds coming over my fence

Any tips for how to handle my neighbor’s trees/weeds growing over (and through) my fence? At first it was more of just an annoyance, but they’ve started to grow onto our power lines and roof.

We have flowers growing on our side, so I’d prefer not to kill them in the process, but didn’t know if anyone had any helpful tricks for keeping these back.

Thank you in advance!

Also yes, we’ve already reported it to the city and they basically said they cannot do much until after growing season.

Have you talked to your neighbor?

That looks like a fire hazard, for **both** of you.

    Edit:

I’d call the local fire department.

Talk to neighbor. Depending how that goes and where you live, you should have the right to trim them wherever they cross onto your property.

Buy a cheap hedge trimmer and cut whatever is on your side. I would let the neighbor know first. Maybe they’ll cut it on their own.

If you have a decent weedeater. I would use that. I have to do this twice a year spring and fall to the fence line.

If this is in the US, you can cut any part that comes over your property line. It’s still best to just talk to the neighbor and work it out

    1 Ask them to trim.

If answer is no, proceed to trim your side back.

if it’s over your property lines, it’s yours. Cut it down.

  8. You guys need to have a conversation before both houses burn down. Go talk to your neighbor.

  9. Someone is going through and downvoting all of the comments recommending trimming as soon as they get posted, but why?  Explain yourself. What exactly is bad about trimming your side?

A simple conversation is all it takes and maybe they even take the hint and do it themselves! Early on in my home ownership, my neighbor saw me cleaning up my yard one day and came over to compliment my hard work. They then apologized with a little embarrassment about their plants growing over and through my fence and said I should go ahead and trim if they for whatever reason aren’t getting to it frequently enough. 5 years on and I still feel free to do it without further permission and it makes me feel much better to just get it done and not sit their waiting and wondering if they’ll ever get around to it. Also extends the life of a wood fence to keep all that moisture holding overgrowth off of it. Looks like it’s their fence though based on the flat side facing your yard.

I wish I had that problem. I have creeping bamboo coming under my fence.

Cut anything hanging over your property line and leave your neighbours alone. It’s called a property LINE for a reason.
