As someone who has been doing field research in corn all summer, it’s not terribly common, but I’ve seen a few similar. A combination of genetic predisposition and environmental stress. Sometimes, unusually cold or warm weather at an early developmental stage of the ear can lead to some weird effects.
If all the ears of the plant are the same (assuming there’s more than one) that would be more interesting. Looks like pollination was still relatively effective despite the malformation.
Another thing that’s interesting and happens a lot, especially with inbred lines, is you get an ear where the tassel should be. Makes the plant look pretty funky.
