Is my bird of paradise sick ? Is it root rot ?

I can tell if she’s sick, if she needs repotting, if it’s root rot or if i’m panicking and i just need to leave her be!

The roots are hard not mushy, but i don’t understand why part of it is dark and alien looking ???

I water her once a week-ish or when i stick a chopstick inside 50 – 75 % and it’s dry.

She gets indirect light but the window placement is north (UK) so not as bright as i’d like !!

I think this just needs a new, bigger pot. Otherwise the plant looks healthy

Looks like there may be a little bit of rot, but the main issue is that the plant has outgrown that pot and needs a bigger one. Hard to tell, without seeing the rest of the plant… New roots look mostly healthy. You may have to crack that plastic pot to get it off – and you can cut back some of the roots with a sharp, clean knife before repotting.

I don’t see anything wrong with the plant. You might have difficulty removing it from the pot, if you decide to do so.

BOP produce corms like nodules to anchor themselves and survive the hot, dry summers in South Africa. You just need a bigger pot.
