Composting Hay and Straw Together?

Newbie composter here. Wondering if anyone has had any luck composting with hay and straw mixed together with nothing else added? I decided to give it a try since hay and straw bales are readily available in my area but found my compost is a cold slimy matted mess. The hay I am using is aged and consists of alfalfa and prairie grass and the straw is flax straw – ratio of 2:1 Straw to Hay. Ambient temperature is around 80 and I have been watering / turning the pile every couple days. Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you.
