What’s killing my Maples?

We have a lot of these maples all over my neighborhood, and I’m seeing the all slowly die. Mine have been healthy but this year started to see a lot of bare branches. Is there anything I can do?

Would need a picture of the full tree, but my guess is that you haven’t been maintaining it at all and just letting it grow on its own.

Depending on your climate, but most of the time in the autumn season, you will need to cut branches to direct the growth of your tree and to allow sunlight to pass through to all the leaves. This doesn’t have to be done every year depending on how the tree grows, but usually there are some smaller branches to cut every year. At this point you would have to cut much larger branches.

If you’re not sure which to cut just hire a pro

There’s not nearly enough information here but a handful of small dead branches is typically normal and not anything to worry about.

I’m not sure where you live, but in IL maples look rough, especially if you live where the special cicadas were. We’ve endured about 30 years now of intense droughts mixed with intense flood years, which is a stressor.

They’re a fast growing species, which can mean they’re also prone to falling apart. However, there’s also a lot of factors at play like when your neighborhood was built, how it was or has changed, care, etc.

Your best bet is to consult an arborist. I haven’t heard of any discoveries regarding maples, yet.

I’m curious to see what others may think…
