Cactus

What happened to my grandparents Cactus?

Hey y’all….so my grandparents have lived at this property for over 23 years. This cactus has been there most of the time. All the times I have visited (and lived here as well) I have never ever seen it bloom like this. What exactly happened and why is there soooooo many blooms on this guy? I think it’s kinda fascinating. This is located in the Mojave desert in Southern California.

It’s happy . Eat those things or make some relish or salsa or some moonshine .

Sometimes plants go dormant. Some arid plants only bloom for years they get enough nutrients. Id say most likely something fertilized it, or it got more water this year

Wow there’s like 40+ fruit on some of those pads that’s incredible. This thing has some good genetics.

  4. Dang that thing is happy. Probably the large amount of rain in SoCal this year

it probably got more water/nutrients this year compared to previous years, if you want it to flower/ fruit more often water/ fertilize it more and if you like it so much these can easily be propagated from pads or seeds in the fruit.

Those aren’t blooms, it’s the fruit, aka tuna. Once the ripen to a nice deep magenta, pick them with some tongs. Burn the spines off, then eat them in your preferred method. My favorite method is to freeze, then strain as they thaw, then add to margaritas.

I’d pay for a pad or two, she’s a gorgeous effing queen of a prickly pear and I want to adopt one of her babies lol.

Joking aside, I legitimately would purchase a pad off you. And lyk how/where to remove a pad for propagation 😊

Push the flesh of the fruit through a strainer, collect the pulp and juice, add it to some salsa.

ooo you could probably make a lot of prickly pear preserves

How far from Oceanside are you? I might help you get rid of that pest free of charge.

I won’t hurt the cactus. I’ll just trim off them red poisonous things and haul them out of there 😋
