African Violets

Is my African Violet dying??

There’s a lot more to this I’m afraid then just it’s curling leaves. To start I repotted this plant in a AV pot that absorbs the water on its own but as I was doing so I noticed how it’s roots where very brown. This plant also has a group a fungus flies that have been bothering it. I ended up taking it to a plant store that told me that the leaves at the time looked very healthy and I should try to wait it out and see what happens. Next day lots of the bottom leaves started to fall to the sides of the pot and curl. I called her back to see what was happening and she told me to water it as the soil was very dry the first time and this could be the problem but if it is root rot there isn’t anything I can do about it. So I did that and watered it from the top because of my AVs small root system with about 2 tablespoons of water and pruned most of the falling leaves. Now I think the 3 leaves in the front are starting to curl still (the one in the back has been like this). I just want others opinions what could be the cause because this is the first gift my bf got me and I’m not ready for it to die on me.

The top of the soil seems very dry. In my experience with self watering pots, the bottom roots get over watered but the top roots don’t get water or not enough water. I would try top watering instead of bottom watering and cut off the wilting and soft leaves. It may be good to repot it with some new soil with extra perlite in it.

I have a self watering pot as well. My plant seems to be doing OK, but I have heard that these type of pots can easily overwater your plant. The water will just continually absorb into the soil until it’s saturated. This isn’t always good.

I don’t know much about root rot, but that’s kind of what it sounds like is going on. I would repot it with fresh soil. Give it a little bit of time to dry out and then just try watering a few tablespoons at a time.

Otherwise, it does look like your plant is pretty healthy.
