Plant Propagation

soil or water?

my dieffenbachia had some rot at the base of the the stem but the roots were healthy. i was advised to chop above the rot and stick directly into soil but she’s looking very sad now. is this normal? should i have put it in water to grow roots first or is planting in soil just as effective?

Those wasn’t roots but auxiliary buds. They can make the plant more “bushy”.

In my experience, you can propagate Dieffenbachia in soil an water, but it’s more easy in water since you can see the new roots growing.
