Will I regret this?

We need our pool deck resurfaced and it’s HUGE so pavers are out of the question. We need the French drain widened so that leads to cutting into the existing concrete. What about the above idea for making the existing deck look better? Will I regret the Astro turf? I was thinking that the slabs of concrete vs a full concrete deck slab would be better for movement and lend to not crack as much. Or when it cracks then it’s just fixing that one slab and not the whole thing again.
Anyways, any thoughts to this thinking and design look?

I am reading a ton of articles about people regretting astroturf and pulling it out. Do you have dogs? Apparently the urine smell gets trapped over time.

My backyard has this same design! But my squares are only 2 sq. Ft. big. I love this look and it add a sense of luxury. Everybody compliments it when they see it.

That’s a cool look. Go for it. You could make the AstroTurf space big enough that if things don’t work out, you could replace it with brick pavers. Then could have a neat pattern of brick and concrete as an alternative a few years down the road.

Astroturf can get very hot, sometimes reaching temperatures that are 40–70°F hotter than the surrounding air. On warm, sunny days, artificial grass can reach temperatures of 120–180°F. It has been documented to reach temperatures over 200°F on a 98°F day.

Pools are so expensive to keep up. They have to b chemically treated daily.

I think it looks great. Easy maintenance.

Why use the astroturf? It will a lot better if you simply use mondo grass as most people commonly do. Its dense enough that weeds dont really get in it much.

  8. I only have lawn about 8-12 feet from my pool and depending on the wind a lot of clippings end up in the pool when I mow, even with a bagger. To me, this looks like it would be a hassle to take care of and keep the mess out of the pool if you went with real grass. No AstroTurf experience, but that is certainly what I would do.

Yes. Not functional and the style will fade from popularity very soon, if it hasn’t already

Put a proper base with good drainage. Pour a slab. Get the proper relief cuts. Seal the seams with proper sealant. Make sure the concrete is well supported on all sides.

People worry too much about concrete cracking. Yes, it’s going to. Just control where it cracks and maintain it. It will be beautiful for a long time, and it will look much nicer and be less maintenance and hassle than this option. I’d rather have one crack than a bunch of separate pieces shifting around independently. A slab holds itself in place/together.

Oh, and I’d never put fake grass anywhere. I’ll forgive the driving range for using it in tee boxes, but otherwise, real grass is the only choice for landscaping, in my mind. It’s my favourite part of my yard, why make it plastic?

Edit: also, you don’t replace an entire slab when it needs repair. You cut out the section and replace it, the same as if they were separate pieces. The colour won’t match, but then it never would.

I have large astroturf in my backyard and it’s been great so far. We got the more expensive stuff so it looks pretty real and has had no issues with temperatures during the hot summer days. We also have a dog that uses it as his bathroom. I do wash it down once a week to help keep it from getting stinky, no issues with that either.
