Landscaping

Am I wrong?

Obvious amateur here, with lots of salt as I'm typing this. But a bit of backstory; My husband and I moved into my in-law's place to help financially and physically, renovating and such so we can move them out.

I've been working on their lawn of mainly weeds, and doing gardening. I've been weeding manually istead of buying weedkiller because of the many uptake of bills, and trying to save money. (So much more work than I thought it'd be, oof)

I'm to a point where I feel comfortable starting the bigger projects, starting with having better landscaping and curb appeal.

My in-laws say the small pine tree and brick has to stay, but I personally think it's a horrible spot for a pine tree, especially since it's in the center of that square. I'd like to plant mainly native plants, and was planning on taking the brick square out, and evening the lawn a bit. I would keep the pine tree and plant it elsewhere in the backyard.
Guess I'm just looking for validation or for some tips on how to make it look better.

Take out that thing now before you end up paying for it to be cut down in 10 to 15 years. It’ll bust through that brick and eventually hit your driveway with it’s roots. Now, it’s small enough to move yourself. If your in-laws have a “we’ll enjoy it now and it’ll be someone else’s problem later” attitude then keep it. Moving the brick square is a take or leave it thing. .

there is no design to that yard. A shrub should never be right in front of a window either in my opinion. Check Google images and come up with a design to show them is what I’d do. Create a vision. And, if it helps, my lawn is full of weeds too. I just keep mowing them 🙂
