What is this?

I think it's an elephant hawk moth. It's pretty big as it's longer than the guttering downpipe.

You’re correct. Probably wandering to find somewhere to pupate if it’s not on a fuchsia / willowherb / etc.

Fake snake, that’s actually a fake elephant and a fake hawk

  3. I found one of these crawling across my drive yesterday. Had to look it up to find out what it was and was impressed as I don’t think I have ever seen an elephant hawk moth let alone the caterpillar.

There was no where for it to go on the driveway and it would probably have been eaten by a bird or driven over. I moved him to the garden where hopefully it can find what it needs.
