This pokeweed is poisonous but they eat it down south after boiling and dumping the water a number of times. Doesn’t seem worth the effort to me but this stuff is everywhere in michigan here I see it everywhere in the city (not in the woods though.)

There’s a lovely video of Dolly Parton describing her makeup routine, when she grew up poor. She said for eyeliner, you light a match, blow it out, and lick the end to apply it. For lipstick, she used the juice from a pokeberry (yes, they’re toxic, but she didn’t ingest it, just dabbed it as dye on the lips.)
