When I was a Protestant, I believed that Mary was just a woman, nothing more, and that Catholics were committing idolatry. This is in part because Protestants have a very weak, watered down version of worship, so weak that veneration seems like it is in competition. Real worship is SO MUCH MORE than veneration! The Theotokos is the mother of the church, and we ask for her intercession and prayers. Compare that to the fact that we are called to pray the Jesus prayer UNCEASINGLY, to prostrate before god morning and night, to make space within ourselves for god to dwell in us. THAT is the difference.
